For any unanswered questions, a list of resources is provided at the end of the paper. To drive a car we need not have the ability to tell a carburetor from a tailpipe, but when it breaks down, that little knowledge helps. Behind each email is a powerful engine called the email server which pushes the emails through the internet.

Many computers connected to the Internet host part of the DNS database and the software that allows others to access it.

Some of those elements may stay fairly static and make up the backbone of the Internet. All these devices together create the network of networks. An IP address does the same for internet traffic. How does your web browser know where on the Internet this computer lives. If you knew the specific IP address of the server you were trying to access, you could get to a website by typing in just the IP address. The answer to all these questions is the Domain Name Service or DNS.
