What has a Christmas tree got to do with Christmas. When you think of Christmas, one of the first images to spring to mind is probably a Christmas tree, covered in twinkly decorations, lights and tinsel. But where did the tradition of having a fir tree in our house and decorating it like this come from. Martin Luther started the tradition of lights on Christmas trees when he put candles on them to imitate the starlight that came through the branches when the trees were outside.

The tree is a pagan tradition, appropriated by the Church in Europe and brought to North America.

These trees are decorated with lights, tinsel and ornaments and often topped with a star or angel. Nothing, really, if by Christmas you mean Christ's birth. It all embodies what I think the holiday is about - Being together. Why do you have Christmas tree on Christmas day.
